Why Should We Use Technology?
Technology can assist teachers in adding more time to concentrate on each student’s learning route. Every student takes a different path to learning. Therefore educators can employ a variety of teaching methods—to reach all students.
Because we know that In every class there are students at different stages of learning, technology could help those students who are behind, while those with understanding, and already performing well continue on—at their own pace. Technology enables students to be independent or self-directed learners. Technology provides numerous instant sources of information—as well as feedback. Of course, educators do have to work with students on effective and responsible technology use, including social media accountability and etiquette, as well as how to evaluate the information they find online. We want students knowledgeable and brave enough to try new things, be good communicators, collaborators, and decision makers—and technology can help.
With technology we can easily connect our students to many resources and sources of learning assistance outside the classroom. We should do this more in all schools. All levels of education should work together to help connect our students to experts, who can answer their questions, and offer real world valuable learning experiences. Today, doing this virtually is a reality, and no travel is required.
Let’s connect classes through Skype and Google Hangouts for real-time group discussions that can lead to a multitude of collaborative global learning experiences. The Sunday evening Google Hangouts I have participated in for the past several years on Twitter with #4thchat teachers are a good example of how tech can be used effectively to collaborate. It is wonderful to have educators in six different states working on the same Google document, while chatting at the same time. Students can do similar things to enhance their learning, too.
Technology can help give every student, including the quietest, a global voice. Let’s discover more ways to use technology and social media for appropriate learning purposes in our schools.
