Setting Student and Teaching Goals

We should model the setting of goals for the students. Start by having your students set learning goals at the beginning of the year. Thereafter, it’s helpful to have them review and revise goals at holiday or special event times, such as Thanksgiving, New Years, or even Earth Day.

Work with students to establish learning goals for all their classes and subjects. You can post the goals and periodically review and reflect on them, as well as make necessary changes. Therefore, it is also necessary to reflect on how well goal expectations are met.

As educators we should know where we are going, and set a path to get there. It is good to have a vision and direction for the students, staff and school. Everyone, students, teachers, staff, administrators, parents, and community can be part of the process. This direction can be in the form of a mission, core, or vision statement. It’s best to make sure everyone is aware of these statements, and keeps them current.
